A Message from the Training Director . . .

Adam K. Fuller, Ph.D.

Thank you for taking the time to visit the website of the APA accredited Cornerstone Behavioral Health Predoctoral Internship in Clinical Psychology. If you are a prospective intern-applicant fascinated by opportunities for psychodynamic and psychoanalytically-oriented training, you have come to the right place. Our commitment is to train future generations of psychologists who are interested in understanding the complexities of the human psyche, and using this knowledge to effect positive change in their clients. We view the relationship as the primary agent of psychotherapeutic change, but turn to the "trunk of the psychodynamic tree," the classic psychoanalytic theory, for understanding and solving the complex problems of our population.

Interns typically see their clients one to three times per week for the entire year, providing an uncommon opportunity for in-depth work at the internship level. This work is not for the "faint-hearted." Many of the people we serve have been unable to be treated successfully in other psychiatric and residential facilities, and yet they now thrive under our care. Applying psychoanalytic understanding to your psychotherapy work and witnessing your clients get better is an experience you will not soon forget.

In addition to the therapy experiences, psychoanalytic theory comes to life in our series of didactic seminars, which incorporate relevant case material. Some of our topics include psychodynamic case formulation, interpretation, the role of metaphor, transference and counter-transference, character pathology, and many more. The interns are also invited to our weekly staff-development Theory Seminar, in which we focus in-depth on seminal papers in psychoanalysis. If all of this whets your intellectual appetite, then please read on. The following web-pages provide more information about our organization and other components of our internship training.

Needless to say, we are not all work, with no play. Evanston, Wyoming is a secret little gem in the intermountain west. Our peaceful rural life is complemented by easy access to urban amenities in Park City and Salt Lake City, Utah. What began as a rustic frontier town along the fabled California, Mormon and Pony Express Trails is now a thriving, friendly community in a picturesque, high desert locale. With over 300 days of sunshine per year, outdoor recreation is a must. Located between the Uinta and Wasatch mountain ranges, opportunities for hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, hunting, fishing, and world-renown skiing are literally in our backyard. A spectacular three hour drive north can extend your playground to Jackson Hole, the Grand Tetons, and Yellowstone National Park. Or, go south to the red rock deserts of southern Utah, or 1 ½ hours east to Flaming Gorge and world-class trout fishing on the Green River.

In closing, I would like to express my appreciation for the opportunity to convey what I perceive to be the attitude, viewpoint, and commitment of the professionals at Cornerstone as well as the wealth of opportunities available to those who live in the Evanston area. If you would like to be immersed in an intellectually stimulating environment where a psychoanalytic understanding of clients is enjoyed by the clinicians and interns, consider training at Cornerstone. We look forward to hearing from you.
